Employment Skills Courses - Practical
Employment Skills Courses: Practical
Bridge the gap between knowing how to drive and knowing how to work. These intensive 2-hour practical modules are for new graduates preparing for a first job evaluation and for experienced drivers refining their technique. Book the modules individually to target your needs.
1. Pre-Trip and Air Brake Inspection
Many drivers lose job offers during the initial walk-around evaluation. This module covers:
- ICBC terminology: communicating defects in industry-standard language
- Air brake "stat-test": the precise sequence of the air brake system check
- Inspection reports: documenting a trip inspection so you and your employer stay legally compliant
2. Advanced Coupling and Uncoupling
Protect your equipment and your safety with tractor-trailer connection procedures.
- Safe sequence: the tug test, landing gear operation, and air-line connections
- Sliding the fifth wheel and tandems: redistributing weight and adjusting configuration for different loads
3. BC Winter Readiness: Chaining Up
In BC, chaining up is a survival skill for mountain passes.
- Hands-on installation: installing triple tire chains on a real tractor-trailer unit
- Winter safety: when and where to deploy chains, and how to inspect them for wear before a storm
4. Load Security and Cargo Management
A shifting load is a dangerous load. This module covers practical application of National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 10.
- Tie-down techniques: proper use of straps, winches, and chains
- Weight distribution: balancing cargo to avoid axle overloads and maintain stability
Why book an employment skills session?
- Prepare for evaluations: use a session as a mock check-ride before an employer's hiring evaluation
- Customized coaching: instructors adapt to your learning pace and goals
- Stay sharp: useful if you haven't driven a manual or a specific truck configuration in a while
