Driving School FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Banur Driving School frequently asked questions

How much practice do I need before my road test?

ICBC recommends a minimum of 60 hours of behind-the-wheel practice during the Learner (L) stage. Pairing professional lessons from Banur Driving School with consistent practice under a qualified supervisor builds the muscle memory and confidence needed to pass your test on the first try.

Parent tip: Not sure how to coach your teen? Ask our instructors for a "Supervisor Guide" to help you provide the best support from the passenger seat.

What is the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP)?

The GLP is BC's three-stage process designed to turn new drivers into safe experts:

  • Class 7L (Learner): Earned at age 16+ via a knowledge test. Must drive with a supervisor.
  • Class 7N (Novice): Earned after 12 months of safe driving and a road test.
  • Class 5 (Full Licence): Earned after 24 months of safe driving and a final road test.

The Banur advantage: If you complete our ICBC-approved GLP course, you can reduce your "N" stage by 6 months and earn two High School credits.

How do I choose the right driving school?

Beyond being ICBC-licensed, a good school should offer:

  • Safety over shortcuts: We don't just teach you to memorize test routes. We teach you how to think independently and handle real-world hazards.
  • Instructor matching: You should be able to request an instructor whose teaching style fits your personality.
  • Detailed progress reports: Our instructors give feedback after every session so you and your supervisor know exactly what to practise.
  • Flexibility: We work around your school and work schedules.

When should I start my lessons?

  • Beginners: We recommend 2 to 3 lessons immediately after getting your L to build a solid foundation and avoid developing bad habits early on.
  • Intermediate: Regular check-ins throughout your training year keep you on track.
  • Pre-test: A brush-up lesson 1 to 2 weeks before your road test is highly recommended to fine-tune your skills.

What are the benefits of classroom training?

Driving is more than just steering. Our classroom sessions cover the "what ifs", such as tire blowouts, hydroplaning and complex right-of-way rules, that you may not encounter during your on-road hours. It is a safe space to ask questions and build the knowledge required for the ICBC road test.

Do you provide a car?

Yes. Our training vehicles are modern, safety-inspected and equipped with dual-foot controls so your instructor can assist if needed.

Can I be picked up?

Yes. We offer door-to-door service from your home, school or workplace within our service areas.

Can I use your car for the test?

Yes. We can arrange for you to use the Banur vehicle for your ICBC road test, often including a warm-up lesson right before your appointment.

Do I pay upfront?

We offer flexibility. You can pay per lesson or choose a package for discounted rates. Instalment plans are also available to fit your budget.

Can you tell if I'll pass?

We cannot guarantee a result, but we offer simulated road tests that give you an honest assessment of your readiness and highlight areas for improvement.

What happens if I miss a class?

Life happens. Our classroom modules are flexible. If you miss a session, you can make it up during the next rotation. We ask for 2 business days' notice for standard lessons and 5 business days' notice for longer classroom sessions to avoid cancellation fees.
