Graduated Licensing Program

ICBC-approved Graduated Licensing Program

Getting your driver's licence is a major milestone, and it is also about safety. The Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) is an ICBC-approved driver education program that helps new drivers in British Columbia build safe habits, practical road skills, and real-world confidence. It lets students gain experience gradually through structured learning and professional training.

Our ICBC-approved GLP course is one of our most popular programs. It prepares students for more than the road test. Through professional instruction, practical driving experience, and defensive driving education, we help students build driving skills they will use for life.

Benefits for graduates

Students who successfully complete the GLP course may qualify for:

  • Up to 6 months reduction in the Novice (N) stage
  • 2 high school credits toward graduation
  • GST exemption for eligible students
  • Professional coaching from experienced ICBC-licensed instructors
  • Better preparation for everyday driving

Understanding the BC Graduated Licensing Program stages

Stage 1: Class 7L Learner's licence

You can apply for your Class 7L Learner's licence on or after your 16th birthday by passing the ICBC knowledge test and vision screening. This stage focuses on the rules of the road and safe habits under the supervision of a qualified driver. ICBC recommends at least 60 hours of practice during the Learner stage.

Stage 2: Class 7N Novice licence

After holding a Learner's licence for at least 12 months, you can take your first ICBC road test. When you pass, you receive a Class 7N Novice licence and can drive independently, following GLP restrictions. The Novice stage builds on-road experience and decision-making through everyday driving.

Stage 3: Full Class 5 licence

The final stage is the full-privilege Class 5 licence. Normally, drivers complete 24 months of safe driving with a Novice licence before they are eligible for the Class 5 road test. Students who complete an ICBC-approved GLP course during the Learner stage may qualify after 18 months, provided they keep a clean driving record and meet all ICBC requirements.
